Alethkar

A war-torn kingdom of spires and storms where magic shapes destiny.

Alethkar is a major kingdom located on the planet Roshar within the Cosmere universe. While frequently discussed alongside Warbreaker due to shared authorship and interconnected magic systems, Alethkar serves as the primary setting for The Stormlight Archive series rather than Nalthis.

Lore & Background

The kingdom's history is marked by a long war against the Parshendi, a non-human species that once lived in peace before being enslaved and later rebelling. This conflict has driven much of the political maneuvering within Alethkar, as different factions vie for control over the Shattered Plains. The discovery of ancient ruins and the return of magic have further complicated the kingdom's stability.

In Their Own Story

The wind howled through the spires of Kholinar, carrying the scent of ozone before the Highstorm struck. A lone knight tightened his grip on a blade that hummed with power, watching the clouds turn a bruised purple overhead. He knew the storm would cleanse the dust from the streets, but it could not wash away the blood spilled in the name of kings.

Reader's Guide

The Shattered Plains form the eastern frontier, a jagged landscape where most military campaigns occur against enemy forces. The terrain is treacherous, filled with chasms and rock formations that offer strategic advantages for defenders. Kholinar serves as the capital city, located in the southern region of the kingdom. It features grand architecture designed to withstand storms, including massive bridges and spires that pierce the sky during calm periods. Urithiru is a hidden ancient city buried beneath the Shattered Plains. Though not technically within modern Alethkar borders, it holds immense historical significance for the kingdom's knights and serves as a sanctuary for those seeking refuge from war.
